From early 1920 through the spring of 1922, Phena had grown two inches taller. At four feet and eleven inches tall, she topped the scales at eighty-five pounds. Des proudly marked her height on the kitchen doorframe in pencil, jokingly told her she had grown into a âstrapping brute of a thing.â She laughed at that before she fired back, âAnd you got muscles like a railroad man!â
Des was quite proud of his improved physique. Moreover, he was especially grateful for his job at the Diamond Paper Company where he had rapidly progressed from cutter at the mill to warehouse manager at their distribution facility.
He flexed his giant bicep. âWrap your hands around this.â
She eagerly gripped his arm, anticipating what would come next. He lifted her off the floor and strolled around the living room, gently swinging her as she dangled from his muscular arm, giggling delightedly, enjoying the ride.
They were very happy these days, he with his job and she with her promotion to freshman in high school, having skipped a grade because she was so very smart. Each enjoyed their extracurricular activities. Des had joined a menâs club, and Phena had joined the school tennis club.
Some evenings, they worked at their desks in Desâs office room, Des paying bills and working out their budget, while Phena finished her homework. She loved having her own desk. She especially loved that Des regarded her so highly as to share his office with her. In her eyes, they were a team.
During her summer break from school, Phena spent her mornings playing tennis in the park with Gretchen, and her afternoons bussing tables at Howardâs restaurant. She took in the moving picture show with Amelia and Pammy on Sundays, and sometimes Des accompanied them. Phena made it a point to never miss the newest Valentino film. While she sat rapt in the darkness, subtly gasping at Valentinoâs romantic sexuality (which aroused feelings she did not completely understand), Des found himself both admiring and dreading her gradual transformation from child to young woman. He looked forward to autumn when she would return to school where her time would be filled with less carnal distractions.
Unfortunately, there was still plenty of summer left, and her increasing hormonal fluctuations began to cause problems that wore on them both. She was irritable more often than not, prone to sudden, explosive tantrums. When she was not irritable, she was giddy and flirtatious. Occasionally she inappropriately directed her flirtatiousness at Des. One time, she embraced him from behind and, caressing his chest, kissed the side of his neck. Appalled and ashamed by his wholly natural but unwelcome arousal, Des admonished her. She responded innocently, only kidding, you know, but he knew better. After that, she treated him as if he was only as important to her as the toilet paper in the bathroom. He preferred that to her confused experiments regarding her newly-discovered but vaguely understood sexual power. He allowed her to distance herself from him, and he gradually distanced himself from her.
